FREQUENTLY QUESTIONS

What is a dashcam and how does it work?

A dashcam, also known as a dashboard camera, is a small video camera that is mounted on the dashboard or windshield of a car. It records everything that happens in front of the car while driving, providing evidence in case of an accident or other incident. Dashcams are usually powered by the car’s battery and start recording automatically when the car is turned on. They store video footage on a memory card, which can be reviewed later.

Three important things about dashcams are:

  1. Dashcams can be very helpful in providing evidence in case of an accident or other incident while driving. This can be especially important in cases where there is a dispute about who was at fault or what exactly happened.

  2. Dashcams come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and price ranges. Some are very basic and only record video, while others have additional features such as GPS tracking, motion sensors, 5G LTE, and Wi-Fi connectivity.

  3. Dashcams are legal in Canada but if you are buying from a different country, it is important to check the laws in your specific country or state before using a dashcam.

What are the benefits of using a dashcam?

Using a dashcam can provide a number of benefits, including:

  1. Evidence in case of an accident or other incident while driving. This can help prove who was at fault and can be very helpful in insurance claims or legal proceedings.

  2. Peace of mind: Knowing that your dashcam is recording everything that happens while you’re driving can give you peace of mind and make you feel more secure on the road.

  3. Protection against insurance fraud. Some people may intentionally cause accidents in order to make false insurance claims. Having video evidence can help prevent this type of fraud.

What features should I look for in a dashcam?

When choosing a dashcam, there are several features to consider:

  1. Video quality: Look for a dashcam that records in high definition (HD) or higher. This will ensure that the video is clear and easy to see.

  2. GPS: Some dashcams have built-in GPS tracking, which can provide additional information about your location and speed at the time of an incident.

  3. Parking mode: Some dashcams have a parking mode that will automatically start recording when it detects motion or an impact while the car is parked.

  4. 5G LTE cloud connectivity: Some newer dashcams offer 5G LTE cloud connectivity, which allows you to store your footage in the cloud rather than on a memory card. This can be useful if you want to access your footage remotely, or if you’re worried about the dashcam being stolen or damaged.
  5. Size and design: Consider the size and design of the dashcam, and whether it will fit in with the aesthetics of your car. Some dashcams are more discreet than others, and can be mounted behind the rearview mirror or in a hidden location.

  6. Field of view: Look for a dashcam with a wide field of view, as this will capture more of what’s happening on the road. Some dashcams have a 180-degree field of view, while others have a narrower angle.

  7. Ease of use: Choose a dashcam that is easy to install and use. Some dashcams come with an app that allows you to view footage and adjust settings, while others have a simple interface that can be controlled with buttons.

  8. Brand reputation: Consider the reputation of the brand and read reviews from other users to get an idea of the dashcam’s reliability and performance.

Can I install a dashcam myself?

Yes, with a bit of elbow grease and mechanical know how you can install a dashcam yourself. It’s important to hardwire your dashcam properly so you do not void your vehicles warranty or damage other components. Here are a few steps to help get you on your way:

  1. Choose a suitable location on your dashboard or windshield to mount the dashcam. Make sure the view is unobstructed and doesn’t interfere with your vision while driving.

  2. Clean the mounting surface with a microfiber cloth to ensure a clean and smooth surface for the adhesive to stick to.

  3. Peel off the backing from the adhesive pad and carefully attach the dashcam to the mounting location you have chosen.

  4. Connect the power cable to the dashcam and route it along the edges of your windshield and dashboard to hide the cable from view.

  5. Plug the power cable into your car’s cigarette lighter socket or use a hardwire kit to connect it directly to your car’s battery.

And voila! You’re all set to use your new dashcam!

Yes, dash cams are legal in BC! While there is no specific law that prohibits the use of dash cams in the province, there are some guidelines that drivers should be aware of to ensure that they are using their dash cam in a legal and responsible manner.

For example, drivers should not record audio with their dash cam, as this is illegal under section 3 of the Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA). It is also important to make sure that the dash cam does not obstruct the driver’s view of the road.

Using a dash cam can provide valuable benefits, such as evidence in the event of an accident, and can act as a deterrent to criminal activity. If you are considering installing a dash cam in your vehicle, we recommend following the guidelines outlined above to ensure that you are using it in a legal and responsible manner.

Are Dashcams Worth the Money?

Whether or not a dashcam is worth the money depends on your individual needs and circumstances. However, there are several reasons why you may want to consider investing in a dashcam. As mentioned earlier, dashcams can provide evidence in the event of an accident, prevent insurance fraud, and provide peace of mind while driving. Additionally, some insurance companies offer discounts for drivers who have a dashcam installed in their vehicle.

Do Dashcams Drain Car Battery?

Dashcams can potentially drain your car battery if they are left on for an extended period of time while the vehicle is turned off. However, most modern dashcams are designed with a low-power mode that will prevent excessive battery drain. Additionally, many dashcams are equipped with a feature that will automatically turn off the camera after a certain period of time if the vehicle is not running. Top of the line dashcams are built with battery health and optimization in mind and they automatically turn on and on triggered by motion sensors.

Do Dash Cameras Record When the Car is Off?

Budget dashcams will not record when the car is off. Some dashcams are equipped with a battery backup that will allow them to continue recording for a short period of time after the vehicle is turned off. Some newer vehicles have a feature that allows certain electrical components, including the power supply to the dashcam, to continue operating for a short period of time after the ignition is turned off. Top of the line dash cams like Thinkware or Blackvue have dedicated software that allows them to continue recording when the car is off triggered by motion  or impact.

In general, having a dashcam can be a way to demonstrate to your insurance company that you are a responsible driver which has lowered some peoples premiums.
